When a vehicle titled in another state comes to Florida, the state requires a physical inspection of the vehicle identification number before it will issue a Florida title. An authorized official examines the VIN plate on the vehicle, records the odometer reading, and certifies both on Form HSMV 82042. The completed form goes to the tax collector's office with your title paperwork.
✅You moved to Florida and are registering a vehicle titled in another state
✅You bought a car, truck, motorcycle, or trailer out of state and are titling it here
✅You spend winters in Florida and are registering a vehicle you keep here
✅Your leased vehicle is being retitled in Florida
✅The tax collector's office asked you for a completed Form 82042
Florida law authorizes a short list of officials to certify a VIN: a Florida notary public, a law enforcement officer, a Florida licensed motor vehicle dealer, a DMV compliance examiner, and certain military officers for service members. Most people choose between waiting at an office or having a notary come to the vehicle. TMF Notary is the second option.
1. Book an appointment and tell us where the vehicle is parked.
2. A commissioned notary comes to the vehicle, inspects the VIN plate, and records the odometer reading.
3. You receive the certified Form 82042, ready to submit with your title paperwork.
The inspection itself takes about ten minutes. Appointments run Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM, with same-day availability in most of the service area.
Out-of-state purchases and seasonal residents make up most of the VIN verifications we complete. If the vehicle is in Florida but your paperwork mentions another state, plan on needing this inspection; the tax collector's office will not issue a Florida title without it.
VIN verifications are from $97, all-inclusive. The price covers travel to the vehicle, the inspection, and the certified Form 82042. There are no add-on fees.
Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Deerfield Beach, all of Broward County, and areas south of West Palm Beach. The vehicle must be physically present at the appointment.
Can a VIN verification be done online? No. Florida requires a physical inspection of the vehicle, so this is an in-person service only.
Do I have to bring the vehicle anywhere? No. The notary comes to the vehicle, at your home, office, or storage location.
What should I have ready? The vehicle itself and your title or registration paperwork showing the VIN. The notary handles the form.
